About the Artist
Andrea Moore (b. 1958) works in an art form of her own invention which she describes as “sculptural painting.” She uses a bold and energetic palette overlaid with cut and carved wooden 3-D forms that create a dynamic surface. Prior to 2011, Moore’s style was primarily abstract; however, starting from 2005 she decided to tackle the garden restoration of her second home, Doughton Manor, located in Tetbury, England, and her artwork took a dramatic turn.
Immersing herself in her English garden proved remarkably satisfying and fed Moore’s creative energies. She transitioned away from abstraction in her paintings and began to explore botanical themes. The sixteenth century buildings and interiors of Doughton Manor also influenced her artistic journey. She established a studio and art gallery inside the Manor, and created artworks inspired by its carved oak furniture and decorations.
Traveling throughout the country, her artistic eye was keenly focused on all things English - the countryside, gardens, castles, ancient stone sites, and museums have all proved influential. She has been inspired to expand her artistic reach, learning wood whittling, stone carving, needlework, photography, and printmaking.
Her work showcases large scale botanical paintings and prints and includes many other media that serve to document the influences that her work in the garden, and her life in England, continue to make on her artwork.
She holds a Master of Art Education from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and a BFA in sculpture from the Washington University School of Fine Arts In St. Louis, MO. She works out of her studios in Falmouth, MA and Tetbury, England.
